Pro Tips for Kawaii Cooking 🌸
Use proper sushi rice
Short-grain Japanese rice is non-negotiable. Long-grain rice doesn’t stick and your kawaii shapes will fall apart before you can admire them.
Wet hands prevent sticking
Keep a bowl of water nearby and wet your hands before touching rice. Dry hands = rice sticking everywhere. Wet hands = smooth, clean shaping.
Small scissors for nori
A pair of dedicated clean scissors just for nori gives you far more control for tiny details than a knife. Nail scissors work perfectly.
Warm rice is easier
Shape rice while still warm — cold rice is harder to mould and cracks more easily. Keep in a rice cooker on “warm” or cover with a damp cloth.
Add nori faces last
Add all nori decorations just before serving or packing. Nori absorbs moisture from rice and goes soft and soggy if left on too long.
Natural light for photos
For aesthetic food photos, use natural side-lighting from a window. This shows all the textures and colours without harsh shadows. No flash.
