Tower Birthday Cake with Cupcakes Around It & Cupcake Toppings
The ultimate celebration centerpiece: a little birthday cake crowning a tower of pretty cupcakes. Here’s the recipe, how to build it, and dozens of easy topping ideas.
The centerpiece and dessert in one
A tower birthday cake with cupcakes around it is one of my favorite party tricks. You get the drama of a tiered showstopper, but everyone can just grab a cupcake — no cutting, no plates, no fuss. And the little cake on top is perfect for the birthday photo and the candle moment.
It looks like something from a bakery window, but it’s genuinely doable at home — especially if you lean on a box-mix shortcut for the baking and save your energy for the fun part: the toppings.

Here’s why it beats a regular cake for a party:

Vanilla cake, cupcakes & buttercream
One versatile vanilla batter makes the 8-inch cake and 36 cupcakes for the tower. Short on time? See the box-mix shortcut in the card. Use the size planner to scale up.

How to build the cupcake tower
Assemble the tower where it will be served — it’s much easier than moving a finished one. Here’s the order that works every time.
🗼 Set up a sturdy stand
Place a tiered cupcake stand on a flat, level table. Make sure it’s stable and rated for the number of tiers you’re using before you load it.
🧁 Decorate cupcakes first
Frost and top all the cupcakes before they go on the stand. Reaching in to decorate later smudges the ones already placed.
🎂 Crown it with the cake
Put the finished 8-inch cake on the very top tier (or a small riser above the stand). Add the topper or candles now while you can reach it easily.
⬇️ Work bottom to top
Fill the widest bottom tier first, then work up. Space the cupcakes evenly so each tier looks full and balanced.
🌿 Fill the gaps
Tuck in greenery, baby’s breath, or edible flowers between cupcakes to hide the stand and give it that florist-finished look.
❄️ Keep it cool until go-time
Buttercream softens in heat. Assemble as close to serving as you can and keep it out of direct sun or warm spots.

Easy cupcake topping ideas
The cupcakes are little blank canvases. Mix a few of these across the tiers for a tower that looks styled, not repetitive.
🌀 Buttercream swirls
Pipe tall swirls with a star tip in pastel colors. The single biggest upgrade — instantly bakery-level.
✨ Sprinkles & sanding sugar
Roll or shower the tops in themed sprinkles, nonpareils, or shimmery sanding sugar for color and sparkle.
🍓 Fresh fruit
A berry, a fig half, or a citrus twist adds a fresh pop and looks elegant with minimal effort.
🍫 Chocolate drip & curls
Drizzle melted chocolate or ganache, or add chocolate shavings and curls for a rich finish.
🌸 Edible flowers
Tuck in pesticide-free edible blooms or sugar flowers for a soft, romantic, garden-party look.
🍬 Candy toppers
Mini chocolates, gummies, or themed candies make kid-friendly cupcakes that match any party.
🍪 Crushed cookies
A sprinkle of crushed sandwich cookies, graham, or biscoff adds crunch and a cookies-and-cream vibe.
🎉 Toppers & number candles
Little picks, glitter toppers, or number candles tie the whole tower to the birthday theme.

Little things that make it great
🌡️ Room-temp ingredients
Softened butter, room-temp eggs and milk blend into a smoother batter and a more even, tender crumb. Pull them out an hour ahead.
🧁 Fill liners two-thirds
Overfilled liners spill and dome unevenly. Two-thirds full gives a nice rounded top with room for a buttercream swirl.
❄️ Cool completely
Frost only fully cooled cake and cupcakes, or the buttercream slides right off. Speed it up in the fridge if you’re short on time.
🎨 Crumb-coat the cake
A thin first layer of frosting traps the crumbs. Chill it, then add the final coat for a clean, smooth finish.
🌀 Use a piping bag
A star tip and a piping bag turn frosting into pro-looking swirls. A zip-top bag with the corner snipped works in a pinch.
📅 Bake ahead & freeze
Unfrosted cupcakes and cake layers freeze beautifully for up to a month. Thaw, then frost and assemble on party day.
What you’ll want on hand
