A smash cake should be a happy, mess-making moment — not a sugar rush. This one keeps things gentle: a moist whole-wheat banana cake sweetened only with fruit, and a naturally purple blueberry frosting with no added sugar. It comes together in one bowl, bakes in a mini pan, and is soft enough for little hands to grab.

Sugar-Free Smash Cake Recipe
Two easy parts: a one-bowl whole-wheat banana cake and a soft blueberry frosting. Both skip refined sugar entirely and let fruit do the sweetening.
Sugar-Free Smash Cake with Blueberry Frosting
A moist whole-wheat banana cake with naturally purple blueberry frosting — no refined sugar, no honey, made for baby’s first birthday.
🍌 For the Banana Cake
- 1½ cups (180g) whole wheat flour (or white whole wheat)
- 1½ tsp baking powder · ½ tsp baking soda · ½ tsp cinnamon · pinch of salt
- 2 very ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 cup) — the sweeter the better
- ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 large eggs (or 2 flax eggs)
- ¼ cup melted unsalted butter or mild oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup whole milk (or unsweetened plant milk)
🍒 For the Blueberry Frosting
- 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1 tbsp water
- 8 oz (225g) full-fat cream cheese, softened (or thick Greek yogurt / dairy-free cream cheese)
- ½ ripe banana, mashed, or 2 tbsp of the blueberry reduction, for extra sweetness
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
📝 Make the Cake
- Prep. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 4-inch mini cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment (or use one 6-inch pan).
- Mix dry. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a bowl.
- Mix wet. In another bowl combine the mashed banana, applesauce, eggs, melted butter, vanilla and milk until smooth.
- Combine. Fold the wet into the dry until just mixed — don’t overwork it. Divide between the pans.
- Bake. Bake 18–22 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
🍒 Make the Blueberry Frosting
- Cook the berries. Simmer the blueberries with the water 5–6 minutes until jammy, mash well, then cool completely. Strain for a smoother frosting if you like.
- Whip it. Beat the softened cream cheese until smooth, then beat in the cooled blueberry puree, mashed banana and vanilla until soft and evenly purple.
- Chill. Refrigerate 15–20 minutes so it firms up enough to spread.
🎂 Assemble
- Stack. Spread frosting between the two cooled layers, then over the top and sides.
- Serve. Chill until baby’s ready, add a single candle, and let the smashing begin!
About the Blueberry Frosting
The colour is all natural — cooked-down blueberries tint the frosting a soft purple with no food dye. Two easy bases work depending on your baby:
Cream cheese
Full-fat cream cheese makes a classic, spreadable frosting that holds its shape for the photos. Best if baby already does dairy.
Yogurt or dairy-free
Thick Greek yogurt (strained overnight) or a dairy-free cream cheese keeps it lighter and works for dairy-sensitive babies.
Tips for the Perfect Smash Cake
- Ripe bananas are everything — brown and spotty means naturally sweet, so you don’t miss the sugar.
- Cool the cake fully before frosting, or the cream cheese slides right off.
- Mini pans make the classic look — 4-inch layers are the perfect grab-able size for little hands.
- Strain the blueberry puree for a silky-smooth frosting (skip if you don’t mind flecks).
- Keep it chilled until the moment of the smash so the frosting stays firm.
Make-Ahead & Storage
- Bake ahead: the cake layers can be baked a day ahead, or frozen up to 1 month — thaw and frost the day of the party.
- Frosting: make up to 2 days ahead and keep chilled; give it a quick stir before spreading.
- Leftovers: because the frosting is dairy-based, store the cake in the fridge and enjoy within 3 days.
Easy Swaps
Egg-free
Replace the eggs with 2 flax eggs (2 tbsp ground flax + 6 tbsp water, rested 5 minutes). The banana keeps it moist.
Other fruit frostings
Swap blueberries for strawberries or raspberries for a naturally pink frosting — same method, same no-added-sugar result.
Sugar-Free Smash Cake FAQ
Is this smash cake safe for a 1-year-old?
Yes. It has no refined sugar and no honey (honey isn’t recommended before 12 months). It does contain wheat, egg and dairy, so it’s best once your baby has already tried those foods without a reaction. Egg-free and dairy-free swaps are included, and it’s always wise to check with your pediatrician.
How is the cake sweetened without sugar?
All the sweetness comes from very ripe mashed banana and unsweetened applesauce in the cake, plus cooked-down blueberries in the frosting. No refined sugar, honey or syrup is added.
Why is the frosting purple without food dye?
Cooking blueberries down into a jammy puree releases their deep natural colour, which tints the cream cheese or yogurt base a soft purple — no artificial dye needed.
Can I make it dairy-free or egg-free?
Yes. Use a dairy-free cream cheese or thick coconut yogurt for the frosting, and replace the eggs with two flax eggs (2 tbsp ground flax + 6 tbsp water, rested 5 minutes) in the cake.
What size pan do I need for a smash cake?
Two 4-inch mini cake pans give the classic tall little smash-cake look. One 6-inch pan also works — just bake a few minutes longer and slice it in half to layer.
Can I make it ahead of the party?
Yes. Bake the layers a day ahead or freeze them up to a month; make the frosting up to 2 days ahead and keep it chilled. Frost the day of for the freshest look.
How do I store leftovers?
Because the frosting is dairy-based, keep the cake covered in the fridge and enjoy within 3 days.
Will it be sweet enough for my baby?
Babies are happy with far less sweetness than adults expect, and ripe banana plus blueberry gives plenty of natural sweetness. If you’re tasting it yourself, remember it’s designed to be gently sweet, not sugary.
Can I use a different fruit for the frosting?
Absolutely — strawberries or raspberries make a naturally pink frosting using the same cook-down method, with no added sugar.
Can adults and older kids eat it too?
Definitely. It’s a wholesome, lightly sweet cake everyone can enjoy — the birthday baby just gets the first (messiest) slice.
Happy First Birthday!
This sugar-free smash cake lets baby dig in to a sweet, wholesome moment — whole grains, fruit sweetness, and a naturally purple blueberry frosting, with no refined sugar or honey in sight.
